Transparent Records was a small DIY record label out of Clarkston MI, run by Paul Holstein from 1996 through 2002 – a total of over 6 years. The focus of the label was on punk, garage and hardcore, mainly bands from the Detroit area.
Transparent Records is no longer an active label. Some records, including limited editions from my personal collection, may still be available from me directly. If you are interested in something, please send an E-mail to transparentpunk@hotmail.com.

This
release was recorded locally by Tim Pak at Woodshed Studio, funded by
Transparent Records who were on site for the recording.
At this time (early 1996) Transparent Records was myself and a partner
who bailed mid way through this release.
Grayson, the guitarist for Johnny Motel and the Fast Fucks, was a
personal friend and the basis for this selection as the first release.
With Transparent Records funding, Grayson designed the sleeves and had
them printed, while I did the mastering and pressing of the vinyl.
Colleen did the inserts, which were literally hated by Johnny Motel.
At the insistence of Johnny Motel, the inserts were deleted and only
ended up in a very few of the records.
Johnny Motel and the Fast Fucks played
a few shows while they were
together, all of which ended in chaos, injury, nudity, drunkenness, destruction
of property, and eventually arrests. Johnny
Motel and the Fast Fucks have no releases other than the 7” on Transparent
Records, their cover song on the Transparent Records 2x7” Tribute to The
Dwarves and the one song on the Transparent Records CD sampler.

This release was recorded locally by Jim Diamond at Ghetto Recorders, funded by Transparent Records. Marc Watt of the local band The Dirtys was another personal friend. The bass player for Plan III (Greg Keg) was Marc Watt’s brother-in-law, hence the choice of Plan III as the second release. Another factor was that Plan III actually played hardcore, versus the garage rock that Johnny Motel and The Fast Fucks were playing… and Transparent Records was always intended to be a hardcore label. Greg Keg and I did the layout for the sleeve one evening in my basement, the printing was done at a Clarkston printer (Spectrum Printing), and this one was complete. Plan III also played a few local shows, which were for the most part were without incident. Due to heroin addictions, strained relationships, and lack of funds, this was a short-lived band. There is a DAT full of songs that Plan III did prior to their Transparent Records release that exists, and was never released. One Plan III song was also released on a Beer City Records compilation CD.

This was the type of project that the label was started to do. The Dwarves were the favorite band of about everyone at that time, and it wasn’t hard to get bands to sign on. Time was booked at Ghetto Recorders, and invitations were extended to all of the bands to come on the same day, share equipment, and record on Transparent Record’s budget. There was plenty of party supplies, and everyone pretty much partied and recorded all day. On hand to record were Johnny Motel and the Fast Fucks, The Bump-N-Uglies, Plan III, several members of The Dirtys, Mr. Twistal, and Unholy Death. Pa should have been there but cancelled, but actually did record the songs at Ghetto on another day when we were mixing the songs recorded at the first session and adding several leads and backing vocals. John from Plan III and Colleen from Johnny Motel met at this session, and John later tattooed a large picture of ‘Tex’ on his arm, and moved in with her. The Dirtys were missing a few members, so they didn’t record, but the member’s that showed up played with the other bands on several tracks. Pictures of the recording session were displayed on the Transparent Records website for about a year. The rest of the songs were received by mail, and the Crypt33 package also included some art that was used for 500 of the covers. The other 500 covers were done by Grayson from Johnny Motel and the Fast Fucks. Printing was done at Spectrum Printing and Thingmakers.

[one of many reviews of this record obtained by the band, this one was easily Transparent Record’s favorite review ever]
Tim, the founding member of Unholy Death, was another personal friend. Tim owned a house in Ortonville, generally considered a “party house”. We were frequently there partying and watching bands play, playing cards and generally having a good time. Even though Transparent Records was meant to be a punk/garage/hardcore label, and Unholy Death was a metal band, when Tim asked to have a record produced it could not be refused. Tim personally made sure that every copy was purchased from the label and distributed – the only band who ever did this (thanks Tim). This record was recorded at Black River Studios in a single afternoon, the art was done by a friend of Tim’s known as The Headless Illustrator, and the printing was again done in Clarkston MI at Spectrum Printing. Unholy Death went on to self-release several additional CDs, and recorded a cover of The Dwarves classic “Satan” for the Transparent Records 2x7” Tribute to The Dwarves.

[review from Flipside (from tear sheet), review from Maximumrocknroll]
Mark Watt was a personal fiend, and The Dirtys were the premiere garage band in Detroit at the time, so this record was a perfect selection as Transparent Record’s 5th release. On the day that this record was recorded at Ghetto Recorders by Jim Diamond, The Dirtys and I sat in a van for several hours outside Marc Watt/Greg Keg’s house in Hamtramck and finished writing lyrics to the songs. The recording went well, and actually included several songs that did not end up making the record (or ever being released). This release was expected to do very well, so another label (Insurance Scam Records) was enlisted to share the cost and distribute half of the records. Troubles began to ensue once things got underway, which started with the etching that was requested for the inside of the vinyl (the band wanted pro-heroin wording, and I wanted anti-heroin wording) and the sound quality of the testpressings. In defiance of the band (which was later determined to be a mistake), the first pressing contained an etching that was part of an anti-heroin poem “Miss Heroin” and was pressed from the initial testpressings that the band rejected. The sleeve was printed with a red logo, and most of the copies ended up going to Insurance Scam Records. As a later apology to the band, a second pressing was done, re-mastered with new plates that did not include the original etchings. The second pressing had a sleeve printed with a blue logo and most copies ended up going to Transparent Records. As expected, this release did very well. The Dirtys also recorded a full length LP for Crypt Records, and several other singles and compilation tracks for local labels. Larry, the guitartist for The Dirtys pictured on the cover of this single, died several months after this record was released (R.I.P. Larry). He will be sorely missed by all.

[flyers for local shows by The GC5, the first one was commissioned by Transparent Records from artist Jeff Gaither]
The GC5 were the first band selected by Transparent Records for a release, that sent a demo and were not actually personal acquaintances. Chuck Lambert, a friend of the band, had sent the demo. Chuck was very persistent, the demo was incredible, the band was fairly close (Cleveland Ohio), and the timing was perfect. For this release, the band had a hook-up with a really good printer so they did the sleeves and Transparent Records did the vinyl. Half of the sleeves were swapped for half of the vinyl by mail, and the job of advertising and selling was split. In retrospect, this is musically the best release that Transparent Records did on vinyl and was sold out very quickly. The GC5 went on to be one of the best street punk bands in America for several years, putting out many more releases including a “Singles Collection” CD that reprinted the songs on this single.

The GC5 “Taken It To The Streets” 7" Limited to 200
Band Members:
Pete Kyrou – Vocals, Guitar
Dave McKean – Drums
Doug McKean – Bass, Vocals
Chris Yohn – Guitar, Backing Vocals
Songs:
A: Molly Maguire, New Generation
Pressing Information:
200 copies, clear vinyl, hand-numbered B&W sleeve on white paper
10 testpressings, hand-numbered B&W sleeve on yellow paper
Note: This was a one-sided record, two songs produced exclusively to sell at shows on the first GC5 tour.

[sleeve art, review from Maximumrocknroll]
The GC5 had recorded their first release on Transparent Records, and were about to leave on their first tour, so things couldn’t be better. Unfortunately, the first release was already sold out. I was looking for an excuse to put out the song “Molly Maguire” in a hurry, since it would only be a matter of time before these guys were on a major label – so doing a tour only one-side release was a perfect fit. These also sold out quickly, mostly on the tour and rest through mailorder after only a single ad.

The New Jacobin Club “A Lesson in Mortality” 7" Limited to 500
Band Members:
Une – Guitar, Vocals
Elvis – Drums

Pressing Information:
350 copies, black vinyl, B&W sleeve.
150 copies, red vinyl, full color sleeve.

[regular release cover, limited edition cover, review from Maximumrocknroll]
The New Jacobin were the first (and only) band to sign up for a record that were not in the U.S. The New Jacobin Club really didn’t have the garage or hardcore sound that I was looking for, but again they were very persistent and reasonably guaranteed that they would buy up all of the records so that I would easily break even. They also promised to do a majority of the work on the release, including advertising and distribution. In the interest of adding new releases, and expanding the label outside of the U.S., Transparent Records signed them up. True to their word, they helped with the release and bought all of the unsold copies. The New Jacobin Club also contributed a song to the “Mechanized Death: An Accused Tribute” 2x7” that would be released years later.

[front cover of 7”, photo of “Playboy” Bubba McKenzie from a live show at The Magic Stick (real blood) by Paul Holstein]
The Bump-N-Uglies were a huge part of the Detroit hardcore scene at the time, and would have been a top choice by Transparent Records even if Amado Movado had not been a friend. The Bump-N-Uglies had always been ECW fans, and had always mixed ECW-style wrestling with their live shows. Being that Madman Pondo was one of their favorites, it was only natural that this record be a tribute to the Madman himself. This was the first release with sleeve printing by Thingmakers, who did a great job in full color even though it was not necessarily requested due to the Transparent Records budget. The Bump-N-Uglies organized a great record-release party for this single, which included an appearance by Madman Pondo to sign records and wrestle during a break in the show. As always, blood, sweat and mayhem ensued.

[Transparent Records commissioned 5-10 flyers to be made by artist Jeff Gaither (and others) for gigs. These are only a sample.]

[The Bump-N-Uglies at Ghetto Recorders recording this single – photo by Paul Holstein, silk screened show poster commissioned by Transparent Records from a local artist that did them all at home by hand (one copy of this poster was signed by every member of every band at the show and remains in the Transparent Records personal collection)]

[Xerox sleeve, band photo and alternate logo provided as promo material to Transparent Records and used for temporary sleeve art]
This is one of several releases that Transparent Records should not have done. Mistakes were made and lessons were learned, and a lot was lost with this release (both financially and emotionally). This release was a direct contributor to the label being discontinued. In addition to Transparent Records being about punk music, vinyl record collecting, and live shows – it was about art. One of the first things that I did when starting the label was write to the punk artists of the time (Mad Marc Rude, Pushead, Jeff Gaither, Stephen Blickenstaff, R.K. Sloane, Spine, S. Clay Wilson, etc.) to find out if art could be commissioned for upcoming releases. While some of the artists were asking too high of a price, others were more than willing to help out. One particular artist, R.K. Sloane, agreed to to do the art for a single (with the original art becoming the property of Transparent Records), if Transparent Records would put out a single by a band that he knew (Beefcake In Chains). Transparent Records agreed, and pressed the record. R.K. Sloane never provided the art however, and the records sat waiting so long that they could not reasonably be sold. It was later discovered that the art was completed, and that the band used it to produce sleeves for their 75 copies of the record. Eventually, Transparent Records tracked down one of the band copies and made 200 full color sleeves for some of the label’s copies, but these are all still boxed and sitting under a pool table in a basement in Michigan. With the original art never received and the records never sold, this release was a total financial loss. It was the first time Transparent Records truly felt ripped off (although later, major losses would be incurred when Rotz Distribution and a local distributor went under).

Songs:

400 copies, black vinyl
20 testpressings, special Xerox sleeve

[flyer by Jeff Gaither for record release party, band promo photo, cover of Transparent Records single]
The Geriatrix were a semi-local band, that I had met several times at Windsor and Detroit shows. They were playing the same raw garage music that The Dirtys and Johnny Motel and the Fast Fucks were playing, and I really liked the demo. The record turned out great, and the record release show at The Milk Bar (with The Hard Liquors) was a huge success.

[white sleeve with gold foil logo, review from Maximumrocknroll]
This was probably the best release done by Transparent Records, as far as the total package goes. The art was done by Mad Marc Rude, who was well-known at the time for his work with The Misfits, The Battalion of Saints and The Dwarves. Mad Marc Rude died prior to the demise of Transparent Records (R.I.P. Marc). The original art was commissioned for $400.00, and was later sold on eBay for $450.00. From the art, Thingmakers did a spectacular job printing the sleeves on red, white and blue stock – with die-cut slits for a full color picture of the band to be inserted in each sleeve. The band logo was done in foil, to match each sleeve color and the inserts were done on a nice heavy stock paper. In addition to the intricate work on the sleeve, custom made guitar picks were added to each color vinyl version of the record. And of course, the music is top notch. This was one of only several releases that could have sold many hundreds more copies than were actually pressed.

The Accused were probably my favorite band of all time. When I started the label, I planned to do releases by local bands, but I also hoped to be able to do a release for one of the bands that I had listened to daily over the years. Of course many of the bands were no longer together, which included The Accused. I had a cover of “Paint It Black” by The Accused on a home-made compilation tape, that had never been released, and I talked to Blaine about releasing it. It was a dream come true when Blaine not only agreed, but let me choose the title and work with Jeff Gaither to design the cover. Blaine sent a whole stack of band photos for the insert (which was quite a task to get shot from poster size down to 7” x7”), label art by K.C. Angel, and a DAT of some additional material to fill out the 7”. The sleeve was printed locally by Spectrum Printing, which allowed me to get the plates (used to print the sleeves) back, and have them signed by Jeff Gaither. The original art for the back cover was sold to a collector in Germany, but the front cover drawing remains in the personal collection of Transparent Records. T-shirts were made for this release, featuring the cover on the front and “Transparent Records” on the back. This was the quickest release to sell out, with several hundred copies being immediately purchased by Subterranean for distribution in Japan.

I met The Pallbearers at the Mardi Gras in 1999 (New Orleans). They were a local New Orleans punk band who had sent a demo, and we hooked up while I happened to be in the area partying with 15 or so friends. We hung out and drank plenty of beer and liquor, and several years later I actually released their record. The Pallbearers also contributed a song for the “Mechanized Death: A Tribute to The Accused” 2x7” that came out in 2002.

The Hard Liquors featured members of Johnny Motel and The Fast Fucks and Plan III, so I was already familiar with them when they formed. After watching a few practices and live shows, Jackie’s unique screaming had caught my attention and convinced me that a record should be done. This was another short lived band, but the music was good so it was worth documenting. Unfortunately, the red vinyl copies of the record were all slightly warped, and the burnt sleeve editions were a little too burned (Thingmakers did a great job, they just smelled burned and I was afraid that would affect other records in my collection) so some copies of this record ended up being tossed out. There was, however, a limited edition with a silkscreened sleeve done by a company called Phazerblast that were hand numbered and turned out great. I had really wanted to do at least one silkscreened sleeve, and this was it.

When I first started the label, I was looking for artists as much as I was looking for bands. Tony Bridges a.k.a. Crypt33 sent me some logos that he did, no charge, which the first logos that I used for the label. Later on he designed a much more detailed logo (my favorite logo for the label, that was also used for T-shirts) and the original cover for the Dwarves Tribute 2x7”. Given the work that he did for the label, it was only natural that I release a record for his band.

This was the first full length undertaking. It was a tough decision, but I decided to go only with CDs and no vinyl. At the time I had stopped collecting LPs (only 7” vinyl and CD) personally, and did not feel that they would sell well or survive long term storage and transport. The cover art was a large (huge!) oil painting on canvas that had to be shipped to the printer and shot down to size with a special camera. The recording was done by Jim Diamond in two sessions, which I got to be present at – a definite highlight in doing the label. The record release party was a huge success, and we really did sell a lot of CDs (50-100 at that one show, the best the label ever did in person). Thanks to the Bump-N-Uglies, this release was almost sold out by the time they were ready with their second release… these guys are relentless at playing shows and shameless self-promotion. This is a great CD too.

The Gutterpunx were another great local band that was always doing shows, and who I knew would be around to help promote and sell the CDs. They had good songs, and a good following, so this was a natural choice for the second full length on Transparent Records. Great guys too, although the wife of one of the members did rip me off for a huge lot of records and T-shirts that she took on consignment for her store…. the store closed, she divorced the Gutterpunx, and split with no word. That was immediately following Rotz Distribution going belly-up owing me about $500.00 and over 200 records and CDs… both contributing significantly to the downfall of the label (but, great lessons learned if I ever do it again).

Ron Rancid and The Nihilistics are a legendary punk band from NYC who were around back in the 80’s when I first started listening to hardcore. When Ron contacted me about putting out a record, I jumped at the chance. This was one of the few really first rate records that I put out, that sold out simply because it was a good record by a good band. Thanks to Jeff Gaither and GaitherGraphix for the great work on the layout.

[silver embossed sleeve, Xerox sleeve for testpressings]
The Hybrid Mutants were one of the few bands that sent a demo, which I listened to and loved. I put this one out mainly because of the great songs, but also because they allowed me to use Jeff Gaither for the art and to do a really nice embossed sleeve on silver paper. These never sold out, and the band didn’t help sell them much (actually releasing the same songs in other formats on other labels), but it was still a worthwhile release.

This
is another of the releases that was regretted.
I did the record solely based on Vadge Moore (ex-Dwarves) being the
drummer. The music was bad, and the
band insisted on using their own artist (not Jeff Gaither which I had planned),
and so the art was bad too. The band
never bought any of the records from me, and none of them sold.
I made 1000, and most are still in boxes at my house – destined one day
for a landfill.

I did this one because of Bobby Steele having been in the original Misfits, and The Undead covered a Misfits song on the record. Later on, Joey Image from Human Buffet (also from the original Misfits) joined the Undead and they played at The Shelter in Detroit. They put me on the guest list and signed a bunch of these records for me, and it was a blast. Also, Bobby personally bought all of the records from me that I could not sell, he’s a great guy. This was one of the best releases on the label, and is destined to become a sought-after collectors item.

The Accused were about my
favorite band of all time, save maybe The Dwarves, so this tribute was on my
mind since the beginning of the label. I
was actually in touch with Blaine from The Accused, so I had full permission to
do this. It took quite a while to
put together, but I was very happy with the results.
Original Martha Splatterhead artist Jeff Gaither contributed insert art,
Blaine supplied the label art, and one of the members of Psychosomatic did the
cover art (with Lance from Thingmakers adding the color).

This was another one of the the releases done to affiliate the label with well-known punk icons. While the music wasn’t exactly hardcore or punk, Joey Image (drums) was one of the original members of The Misfits. As a result of doing this release, I did get to meet Joey and get some autographs, and it was an altogether a fun experience.

This release was the crown jewel of the label, although not the best seller. Full color art by Jeff Gaither, the best song from every release in the first two years, photos of the bands taken at local shows (all photos by Paul Holstein), and finally my own thank-you list. I still play this release occasionally in my car or at home, and many of these songs are punk classics to me.

Ok, this is just a great record. Not because of the full color Jeff Gaither cover art, or because it’s by a classic punk band that includes Blaine Fart (ex-Accused)…. It’s just a great record. An excellent last release…. I wanted to end it all on a good note, and this was perfect.
